Life in halls

03 /Personal safety

Here are a few tips to you keep you and your belongings safe:

  1. Keep the door to your room/flat locked at all times.
Yes, this even means when you run down the hall for a cup of tea.
  2. Shut/lock your windows when you go out
Ground floor windows should be kept shut when you are not in the room - all window safety catches have been checked.
  3. Be careful with your keys and key cards
If you lose them, don't depend on your roommate to keep letting you in. A new set can be purchased from the main reception.
  4. Be wary of who you let into your hall
If you're unsure whether a person should be in the building, don't be scared to ask for their student ID.
  5. Keep an eye on your belongings
Especially if you're in a communal area!
  6. Let someone know where you are
Heading to a club in town? Going on a date? There's no need to spill all the intimate details, but let someone (a friend or roommate) know where you're going and what time to expect you back.
  7. Be careful when going to parties
If you're unsure of the area or the people that will be there, it's a good idea to go with someone.
  8. Keep a phone within reach at all times
You can call security 24/7 on 0131 451 3500, by dialling 2222 from your bedroom phone or by picking up one of the red emergency phones. You can also dial 999 or any other emergency number to assist you, but always let security know you've called them so that they can direct the service to you.
For Scottish Borders, you can call security 24/7 on 01896 892046 or by dialling 2046 from your bedroom.
