ACCOMMODATION
How to enhance the size of your space
Not all accommodation or shared housing rooms are the largest, with some merely consisting of enough space for a bed, desk, and wardrobe. Whatever your living arrangements are, there are a few things that you can do to make your space seem less claustrophobic.
Here are my top tips:
1. Keep it clutter-free
It goes without saying that a cluttered room with laundry thrown around the floor isn’t going to assist in making an area feel spacious. I recommend tidying up as you go along in order to avoid an accumulation of mess that becomes more and more tempting to put off tackling.
2. Open your curtains
In a small space constantly keeping the curtains closed can make you feel like you’re trapped in a box. Make sure to open them and let light in, as well as the view of the rest of the world. Placing a couple of lamps or other light sources around your room may help to open up your space more too so you don’t only have an overhead light to rely on when it’s dark outside.
3. Open your window
Fresh air, as well as light, does wonders for enhancing a room’s atmosphere. Doing this will stop your room from feeling as stuffy which, in turn, can also make it easier for you to fall asleep. If your room is particularly prone to getting warm it may be worth investing in a cheap portable or electrical fan.
4. Make your bed
A newly made bed isn’t only a great motivator to start your day, but it also makes your room look neat and tidy. If you’re indifferent about the colour of your bedding, using light or neutral colours such as white or pale brown tones can help to maintain a simplistic theme, aiding the avoidance of visual clutter.
5. Make the most out of your built-in storage spaces
If you have drawers or under bed space, make sure to use them. Anything that you put in these spaces won’t be taking up extra space in your room. Simple changes such as folding or rolling up your clothes instead of randomly throwing them into your drawers can save drawer space, allowing you to make better use of the storage.
You may not have the biggest room but that doesn’t mean that it won’t be enjoyable to live in. There are plenty of ways that you can make it yours and leave it with fond memories.
