Traditional Scottish Oatcakes Recipe

Ingredients (Makes 6)

200g medium oatmeal
75g plain flour
1 tsp bicarb of soda
50g lard
25g butter
200ml warm water


  • Preheat oven to 150C
  • Mix the oatmeal, flour and bicarb of soda together
  • Melt the butter and lard with the water
  • Combine all ingredients to form a pliable dough
  • Sprinkle work surface with a little extra oatmeal, roll out dough to around 0.5cm thick and cut using an 8cm cutter
  • Bake for approx. 40-50minutes until golden
