Meal Box Subscriptions Review- Rusne
If you’re a student, you know the struggle of finding the time to cook and thinking of meal ideas gets harder and harder. Chances are, you lived mostly on frozen pizza and nuggets most of the semester! Personally, I have tried countless recipes from all kinds of websites but nothing seemed to stick so I ended up making my most trusted and beloved two or three recipes! Also, most of the recipes ask you to buy a lot of spices and ingredients that you don’t usually use, which always puts me off as I don’t have the money or space to buy all these items that I may never use again! So, once uni was finished, I decided it’s time to try something new.
I heard about HelloFresh and Gousto a while ago but always thought it’s just a more expensive food shop that is completely unnecessary. To my surprise, the meal box subscriptions completely changed my mind! I found some good deals where you get your first box for 50% off (always check for deals before ordering anything!) and decided to go for it.
After trying both Gousto and Hello Fresh a few times, I think that these subscriptions are a brilliant way to find some recipes that you like and learn how to cook it! I’m keeping all the recipes that I received from these subscriptions in one place and since I loved almost all of them, I’ll be making the meals again.
Here are a few specific thoughts about Gousto and HelloFresh separately – my initial impressions of the service, the packaging, refunds and service I received!
The first meal box I ordered was from Gousto. First impression? They had an incredible selection of meals to choose from. Also, if you don’t like the selection, simply choose another day delivery and you’ll get new options. When ordering, you can see basic information – what the meal looks like, what ingredients come with it, and how long it will take to prepare it/cook it.
The box contained almost everything you need for the meal – it comes with pre-weighed ingredients (which saved me so much time!), including spices, herbs, vegetables, meat and very detailed instructions. There were only a couple of things that were not included in the box, such as salt, pepper, oil, flour (if you only need a little bit) and milk. Other than that, everything was included. For example, the cheddar cheese comes in tiny little packets, or if you need an egg, you’ll get one egg and so on. I found Gousto packaging extremely well done and when it came to cooking, very easy and quick to find it (as although there were 4 meals, the packaging was numbered accordingly).
The instructions were very clear and easy to follow. I don’t cook a lot because I’m not good at it and I don’t like spending a lot of time in the kitchen so the fact that I got to cook some fancy and delicious meals quickly and so easily, really surprised me! The portions were huge and very filling, so that’s another advantage too. Overall, I was very impressed with Gousto and will be ordering it again.
After trying Gousto, I was excited to give HelloFresh a try – I expected it to be even better as it’s the more popular option and comes with more meals. The ordering part was easy, though I would say that the selection was not as good as Gousto (but again, the meals are changing all the time, it might have been due to the specific date selection) but overall, I found some great options. With HelloFresh, I went for 4-people meals, so although it was just me and my partner eating, we were aiming to cook the meal in the evening, and then have the same thing reheated for lunch the following day, which worked out really well!
The meals were packaged into different bags which is great if you have space for them but if not, you may get confused as to which thing belongs to which meal, which happened a lot with the spices and I had to re-check the quantity before using it so I knew I picked the right packet. Also, some of the vegetables were mouldy on the inside (looked completely fine from the outside so there’s no way to know this before cutting it) so couldn’t use them. We sent a message to HelloFresh about this and they refunded the money into the credit for the next order.Again, the meals were absolutely delicious, the instructions were easy to follow and I am looking forward to ordering it again!
