Types of meditation

Meditation is an umbrella phrase for the various techniques for achieving a calm state of being. Meditation is used in many different forms of meditation and relaxation techniques. All have the same goal in mind: inner serenity.

Ways to meditate can include:

  • Guided meditation. This type of meditation, also known as guided imagery or visualisation, involves creating mental images of places or circumstances that you find pleasant.

    You make an effort to use as many senses as possible, including smells, sights, sounds, and textures. A guide or teacher may guide you through this process.

  • Mantra meditation. To avoid distracting thoughts, you silently repeat a calming word, concept, or phrase throughout this sort of meditation.
  • Mindfulness meditation. This style of meditation is based on mindfulness, or a greater awareness and acceptance of living in the present moment.

    Mindfulness meditation expands your conscious awareness. During meditation, you concentrate on what you are experiencing, such as the flow of your breath.


  • Yoga. To build a more flexible body and a peaceful mind, you practise a sequence of postures and controlled breathing exercises. You're urged to focus less on your hectic day and more on the present moment as you go through positions that demand balance and concentration.

Everyone can benefit from meditation to improve their mental and emotional wellbeing. It may be done anywhere, with no specific equipment or memberships required. There are also many other styles, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages.
