Oxford, The City of Dreaming Spires, is famous the world over for its university and place in history. The golden stone university buildings with their spires, towers and domes shape Oxford, which has been a seat of learning for centuries and a favourite place to visit for people from all over the world.
It has a fascinating history, going back to Roman times when it was a pottery centre. For over 800 years, it has been a home to royalty and scholars, and since the 9th Century an established town, although people are known to have lived in the area for thousands of years.
The university dates back to the 12th Century and is made up of 39 colleges today, each with its own governing body. More recently, one of the colleges has been used as a principal location in the Harry Potter films.
There is a wide variety of entertainment and shopping, as well as museums. It is a city easy to explore on foot.
