Tips for first-year student life

By bzbeth 09 Aug 2017

So, now you've smashed your exams and got your place at university - what's next?

Well, a lot! There are some pretty exciting times ahead. If you aren't sure what's coming up or how to prepare, we are here to help...

These tips will guide you through your first few weeks of your first year at uni:

  1. Don't overpack

Believe it or not, you don't need to pack everything! Figure out the essentials so you don't fill your Mum or Dads car with way too much stuff. Check with your accommodation before you start packing so you know what they provide already.
  2. Make it your second home

Make it your home away from home! Pack things that remind you of home so if you ever feel homesick (FYI: completely normal) they'll help. Home comforts like your favourite photos, posters or even your Xbox are good ideas - plus everyone will want to chill in your cosy games room!
  3. Introduce yourself

Yes, you're going through a big lifestyle change but so is everyone else! You're all in the same boat so don't stay in your room - talk to the neighbours. You might end up meeting your ultimate BFF at university so get out there and meet them.
  4. Take it easy

This might be the first time you've had to look after yourself every day and decide what you do, eat etc - don't go crazy! Uni is a once in a lifetime experience so enjoy it but keep fit and healthy. Take it easy on the takeaways and don't have loads of wild nights out.
  5. Budget

Keep an eye on your money. Once you get your student loan it's tempting to go on a shopping spree but put a budget together and get all the essentials (rent, food, transport, social life) out the way before you go buy those expensive trainers you've always wanted.
