The essentials for your first food shop!

When you arrive at university, ask your parents to take you the nearest supermarket to fill your cupboards - it'll make future shopping trips and mealtimes a lot easier...

  
These 10 ingredients are a must-have on your shopping list:

  1. Pasta
    Whether your favourite is macaroni, penne or spaghetti - whipping up pasta is really quick, it only takes 10-15 minutes. It's incredibly versatile, has the carbs you need for a balanced diet too and you can always opt for the whole wheat version too.
  2. Rice
    Cheap, easy and filling. Rice usually takes about 15 minutes to boil on the hob, or you can buy sachets to steam in the microwave (they usually take less than 2 minutes) for those lazy days. 
  3. Eggs
    Whether you decide to boil, bake, fry or scramble - eggs are quick and easy to make. Don't tell us you can't boil an egg! Packed with protein and essential fatty acids, eggs are a great student staple which can last for up to 4 weeks in the fridge.

  4. Cooking oil
    This is one of the things worth spending a little more money on (extra virgin olive or coconut oil are best), as good quality oil tends to be healthier and better tasting. If you don't want anything too heavy, opt for sprays that are lighter. 
  5. Onions
    Onions go into pretty much every sauce/meal you'll make at uni, so make sure you've always got some in the cupboard. They last about two weeks. Watch the video to learn a very important life skill! Oh, and get your tissues at the ready...
  6. Chopped tomatoes
    Tinned tomatoes are great - long lasting, tasty and really cheap! They work in so many different dishes too. Try adding them to pasta sauces, casseroles, curries or whatever you fancy! 
  7. Potatoes
    If you've got potatoes in the cupboard, dinner is looking good. You will have a choice of baked, boiled, mashed or roasted. Sweet potatoes are another great alternative to white potatoes and are packed with vitamins.
  8. Stock cubes
    All you need to do is crumble them into a bowl, add boiling water and stir for instant stock. Whether you use vegetable, fish, chicken or beef, they’ll add rich salty flavour to your food. If you want to jazz up your rice, add the stock cube whilst the water is boiling. 
  9. Salt and pepper
    It might seem obvious but it's easy to forget your kitchen basics whilst in the supermarket. Salt and pepper can be used to add taste to your cooking or add to boiling water to give vegetables or pasta some savoury flavour. 
  10. Mixed herbs
    Don't know which herb goes with what? Pick up a jar of mixed herbs instead to make life a little easier. A little goes a long way so they'll last ages and they'll add delicious flavour to any dish.
