The big move in...

01 /Moving in checklist

When it comes to moving, it's easy to forget all the little things. Not to worry though, we've got your back! This checklist should help you out...

  1. Complete your inventory
Get this boring (but important!) job out the way first. Take pictures of all the rooms and the contents for when it comes to moving out.
  2. Pop in next door!
Go introduce yourself to your neighbours. You never know, they might end up being your new best mates.
  3. Get a TV licence
Even if you don't have a TV in your house you'll still need a licence if you're watching online (BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub etc).
  4. Sort your council tax
You may be exempt from paying council tax, especially if you're studying full-time. Not sure if you're exempt? Check out the NTU website.
  5. Find out when your bins are collected
Make a note of it so everyone in your house knows. You don't want your new mates next door to hate you for being the messy neighbours, do you?
  6. Take some meter readings
Make a note of your gas, electricity and water readings and call the supplier to register your details.
  7. Make sure you have deposit protection
You should receive some information about this within 30 days of moving in - make note of it!
  8. You'll need insurance!
Worst comes to worst, all of your contents of the house will be protected. Hopefully, you won't need it but it's worth having.
  9. Register to vote
That way you'll be able to get involved in all the general and local elections.
  10. Get yourself down to the local GP
You really don't want to register there when you're actually poorly or even worse trail all the way back home!

Besides all those, don't forget the little essentials - a bin for your room, toilet brush, some cleaning products (everything from bleach to a vacuum cleaner), iron and an ironing board. You can split these between all of you so you don't end up buying all of them!
