Breaking News - Scam Alert!
We have been made aware of reports that international students are being targeted by scammers.
The scammers are allegedly calling on behalf of the Home Office and demand money for various immigration abuse issues including not having shown a specific document on arrival to the UK, or not completing an 'Alien Registration Form' etc.
The scammers ask for personal and financial information and can be very convincing. The scammers often have personal details on the student including mobile and passport numbers. The phone call is made to look like it is from an official Home Office number - they may tell you to Google their phone number and have set up fake webpages and links to deceive you.
The scammers may threaten students with arrest if the money is not paid. Some students have been asked to pay by purchasing gift cards such as Apple iTunes vouchers.
Please note that the Home Office will never contact students in this manner and will never ask you for money over the phone.
What do I do?
- Cease the phone call immediately
- DO NOT provide or confirm any personal or financial details
- Do NOT download any software
- Report the call to Action Fraud and/or South Yorkshire Police
