My experience on the SHSU Volunteering Committee

By RachelBlogger 16 Jan 2018

Hi, I'm Rachel. I'm currently a 3rd year studying Media and I'm Social Secretary of the Volunteering Committee at Sheffield Hallam's Students' Union (SHSU).

I fell into this position at the end of my first year, about a year and a half ago, after completing my first volunteering project called Summer Ballin', winning in an election against two other candidates.

I then spent a year creating a range of fun-filled socials for volunteers at the university.

When my first year of the role came to an end, I ended up running for the position again and luckily, I was re-elected, along with one of my closest friends Lana, who went from Promotions Officer to Chair.

An Introduction to the Current Committee

In the SHSU Volunteering Committee, there are currently four specific roles:

  1. Committee Chair - Lana is the current Chair, and her role is to oversee the committee and to work closely with the Volunteer team at the Students' Union. She is keen that the committee helps to build a community of volunteers through its work.
  2. Campaigns Officer - Brittany is the current Campaigns Officer, and her role is to oversee campaigns within volunteering such as Hallam Holidays and Student Volunteer Week, she is looking to get more societies involved in volunteering.
  3. Social Secretary - Me! My role is to look after socials, create them and oversee them with the aim to please a range of volunteers and help build a bigger community within our volunteers.
  4. Promotions Officer - Our current Promotions Officer is Hannah, and her job is to promote various volunteering opportunities which are available to Hallam students. Like the rest of us, she hopes to get more people involved in volunteering and in the community we wish to grow.

How to get on the Committee

The people on the committee were all voted in by Hallam Students, so if you want a chance to take on these roles next year, all you need to do is nominate yourself in April/May time, and see what happens when the voting takes place, which is shortly after the nomination period.

Student Volunteering Week

The committee's next big project is to work on Student Volunteering Week, where I will also be putting on my next social.

This week, 19th - 23rd February, involves a launch breakfast on the Monday, one-off volunteering sessions, workshops for the Hallam Award and Bright Ideas, getting societies involved in further volunteering, and getting current team projects within the Students' Union to volunteer in difference places, as well as a digital campaign throughout the week.

The main aims of this week are to raise awareness of volunteering both at SHSU and across the country, as well as celebrate active volunteers by putting on a variety of different workshops and events for students to attend and get involved with.

As a department, and as a committee, we're hoping to record 600 hours of volunteering during this week, eager to beat the record set last year of 500!
