Days are getting shorter and we only get to see the sun occasionally in these Winter months. I know I am not the only one who feels gloomier these days and not to mention getting sick more easily.
We will feel much better to just stay indoors nowadays but does it really helps? Here are my tips to help overcome the blues:
Take up some physical activity. I try to get some running in the day as it helps me get my blood pumping the whole day and helps boost my happy hormone! Sign up for a gym if you exercise better indoors. You don’t need to sweat so much though. Maybe walk more or do some basic yoga movements. No time of the day to include any physical activity? Practice deep breathing or a short meditation daily to keep the blood flowing properly.
- Load on some carbs and protein
So important to keep yourself warm and help your body functions properly this cold season. Although I can say we can easily go overboard on the carbs especially (well I did, I mean pizza and pastries? Who can say no?). Stock up your pantry with some good carbs like oatmeal and whole food, also not to forget protein. Prepare seasonal food to get into the autumn-ish mood. Bake some sweet potatoes in the oven and fry some eggs for a wholesome and satisfying meal (yum!) eat the right food and you will feel much better physically and mentally.
- Go out (yes really!)
Don’t stay cooped up. Grab a few drinks with friends or go out to see the city. The city looks amazing even as it gets dark. With winter coming and not to mention Christmas, there are plenty of events coming like the Edinburgh Christmas Market which will begin from this weekend (19th of November). Explore what the market has to offer.
If you are living in the student residence halls, join the events held. The residence life team are always putting up events to keep everyone entertained.
- Do what keeps you happy
Whether its reading, listening to music, knitting. There are just so many things to keep yourself busy and at the same time satisfies you. You won’t notice how time flies as soon as you realize it is already bed time.
Just stay happy and keep yourself busy that’s the trick to beat this gloomy season. You don’t need to keep the fun short because the days are, enjoy the season and greet it like an old friend.
