Will Lifting Weights Make Me Bulky?
Ok, so we're far into 2019, you’ve been hitting the gym regularly and keeping to your New Year’s resolutions. There’s only one problem though, the Treadmill and Cross-Trainer are getting just a little bit boring.
You glance over at the dumbbells and the fixed weights machines, but decide against it because you don’t want to get ‘too bulky’

Today we’re going to look at why this isn’t the case and how adding resistance training to your programme can help you achieve better results in the gym.
There is a common myth surrounding resistance training that by lifting weights you will automatically pack on lots of muscles mass and will be walking around like Arnold Schwarzenegger in no time……….WRONG!
Putting on large amounts of muscle mass is something that MIGHT happen if you train consistently for YEARS, have excellent nutrition, have a training programme centered around increasing muscle mass, have good genetics and a good amount of testosterone (Testosterone levels in females is significantly lower than in males).
For the vast majority of us, lifting weights is likely to add lean muscle mass and make us stronger for day to day activities and generally improve our health and wellbeing.
So what benefits are there to adding weights and resistance training to my gym workouts?
improved muscle strength and tone – to protect your joints from injury
Weight management and increased muscle-to-fat ratio – as you gain lean muscle, your body becomes more efficient.
May help reduce or prevent cognitive decline in older people
Prevention or control of chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, back pain, depression and obesity.
Improved mobility and balance
Increased bone density and strength as well as reduced risk of osteoporosis
Improved sense of wellbeing – resistance training can boost your self-confidence and your mood.
So there you have it, lifting weights won't turn you into a bodybuilder. There are lots of benefits to adding resistance training to your gym programme.
