Tyler's Blog: Ho£iday$ in Edinburgh
Christmas time is always great. However, after my first visit to the Edinburgh Christmas market, I was shocked to see how expensive drinks and food were. If you go a few times, you might as well fly with Ryanair to Germany where you can have authentic Gluhwein and currywurst.
There is good news, though. There are plenty of Christmas and Hogmanay (New Year’s Eve) events in Edinburgh where you can get a deal. If you have an Edinburgh post code, you receive a 20% discount for the rides at the Christmas market and shows at the spiegeltent. La Clique Noel – Part Deux features a new lineup based on the famous cabaret show, which actually originated in Edinburgh.
I was told by a friend that the ice skating at St. Andrew’s Square has a student discount. I cannot confirm that, but I do know it is cheaper if booked online.
Enough of the date ideas, lets focus on Hogmanay. For the street party on Princes Street, you also receive 20% off with an EH postcode. At 25 pounds, you receive a free dram of Johnnie Walker and access to multiple stages where music artists will be performing. You can bring your own alcohol, too. Just make sure it is in a plastic bottle under 500ml. You can bring up to 4 bottles per person.
It will most likely be a cold night, but it beats paying four pounds for a Tennents. Not to mention the view. Take a look at Edinburgh’s Christmas and Edinburgh’s Hogmanay website for other events.
