Stina's Blog: Out and About in Edinburgh

By Megan 10 Mar 2017

March is here and that means that it’s finally time for spring.
Temperatures are starting to rise (or so we hope...it is Scotland after all!) and the sun shows itself a little bit more often. While campus is a great place to soak up the sun there are lots of other great outdoor places around Edinburgh to enjoy the sunny weather.

  1. Arthurs Seat
If you enjoy being active on a nice day climbing Arthurs Seat is the perfect thing to do. You get a nice little workout and at the end you are rewarded with a stunning view over Edinburgh. Remember to bring a jacket though, even if it’s quite a nice day it gets super windy on top of Arthurs Seat!
  2. Calton Hill
This is for everyone who fancies an amazing view of Edinburgh but is too lazy to climb up Arthurs Seat! While you still have to walk up, Calton Hill doesn’t just offer you the view but also lots of other things to explore.
  3. The Meadows
Located in the heart of Edinburgh, the Meadows are always buzzing whenever there is the slightest sight of sunshine. It is great for a BBQ with friends, a couple of drinks in the sun or a game of football. If you don’t fancy any of that it is also a great spot for people watching as there is always something interesting going on.
  4. Princess Street Gardens
This park is a lot more touristy than the Meadows but offers its own charm. It is the perfect spot to enjoy a coffee on one of the many benches with a sensational view of Edinburgh’s Old Town. Plus, the national gallery is just a couple of minutes away so you can enjoy some art if it gets too cold outside.
  5. Portobello Beach
The Beach is the perfect place to be when it’s nice outside. While it’s probably too cold to go for a swim you can enjoy some ice cream while you sit in the sand and watch the waves. There is also an arcade if you’re looking for a place to get rid of your spare change. Plus, if you like dogs this is the place to be.

Don’t fancy any of this? There are always loads of Pubs and Cafes around town that set up outside seating areas during the warmer months so you can sip your pint or coffee in the sunshine.
