Jessica's Blog: Donnie Willow Music Review

By Megan 20 Feb 2018

So, I was lucky enough to be able to see Donnie Willow at Sneaky Pete’s, Edinburgh. Due to the size of the venue the merch stand was a perfect opportunity to talk with the guys and get to know not only the band in music terms but further on a personal level.

As first thoughts I was a fan of the band after taking to Spotify, although nothing could have quite prepared me for the real thing. Although the stage was small, the guys used the space to their advantage making the most of it.  The energy from Arthur, Sam and Pete is second to none. The guys easily got the crowd joining in even those who had not seen them play beforehand and even joined the crowd. On a non-musical related note, unlike a variety of bands, these guys are adamant to keep a good relationship going with fans both on social media and at gigs, doing so through regular interactions with the crowd in an informal style making the experience feel almost personal.

On a musical level, not only does lead singer Arthur have strong vocals but his vocal range and capabilities are a game changer! His ability to switch from screaming to mellow singing in 0.01 of a second is uncommon especially in upcoming bands especially without interference from musical editing. The combination of each individual gives the band a balance as well as showcasing undeniable talent. A refreshing aspect of Donnie Willow is there ability to take a genre seemingly ‘old’ and give it a 1st class makeover enticing both loyal and occasional listeners especially those new to the musical style. Many reviews have praised the several music as well as the lyrical content. The bands lyrics are definitely a further positive mark for the guys. Their clever use of language compliments their music while covering various topics often doing so in great depth. This ultimately is due to their almost new approach to writing which is exciting to see.

As a final comment, although this is opinionated, despite how amazing media such as Spotify portrays the guys, they 100% are more enjoyable live! The energy is intensified and sits perfectly regardless of experience in music. I highly suggest when the opportunity arises to go and see them.
