Ida-Marie's Blog: The 16 Personalities
You might have heard someone tell you that your personality is ENFP or INFJ, however, what does that even mean? The 16 personalities is essentially a way of describing a person by putting them into a category. Like zodiac signs, some people believe that it’s pseudoscience, however, there might be something to it. To figure out which one you are, this blog post will outline each of them briefly, however, if you want a more specific and detailed description of which one you are, then there are multiple tests online. Before explaining what each personality trait consists of, it is important to understand what each letter means. They are four letters in each personality which means that you have one of two traits in each category;
- Extroverted (E) or Introverted (I)
- Sensing (S) or Intuitive (N)
- Thinking (T) or Feeling (F)
- Judging (J) or Perceptive (P)
ISTJ - The Inspector/The Logistician: This personality loves tradition and is often quite formal and serious. They really value hard work and honour and believes that patience is a virtue. They can at times be reserved and quiet which makes them the personality trait that is often misunderstood.
INFJ - The Counsellor/The Advocate: This is the rarest personality type since only around once percent of the personality actually possess this label. Their main purpose in life is to help other people which often leads to them doing charity work. They love idealism and morality, however, they can still set strict goals to make a positive impact on the world. They are often very creative and sensitive which means they are exceedingly compassionate.
INTJ - The Mastermind/The Architect: These characters focus on their own thoughts and love a quiet space which means they are great at focusing on patterns and possibilities. They want things to be planned in advance and likes for everything to have structure because otherwise they might be overwhelmed with emotions which might make them act irrationally.
ISTP - The Craftsman/The Virtuoso: They are curious and love to use their senses to explore the world around them. They are always working on a new project and no matter what it is, they look at it with a positive set of eyes. They love pulling things apart and then putting them back together, just a tiny bit better. They are passionate about reaching out with a helping hand and sharing their experiences.
INFP - The Idealist/The Mediator: These people are very quiet and would rather not talk upon the first time meeting someone. They love being alone, however, want to be able to sense their surroundings and happenings around them. These people believe that signs and symbols have deeper meanings in life which means that they often get lost in their own imagination and can’t stop thinking about new ideas and fantasies.
INTP - The Thinker/The Logician: This personality type focuses more on abstract ideas and interpretations rather than facts and details. They are inclined to be a highly rational person who prioritize logic and reason. They can be messy and disorganized since they are often in their own little world rather than real life. These people also hate superficiality and think small talk is a waste of time which make them quite intellectual people.
ISFJ - The Nurturer/The Defender: These people are sensitive, however, have great analytical abilities. Even though they are reserved, they have excellent people skills and create strong relationships and friendships. They are perceived to be a conservative type of person even though they are greatly receptive to change and new ideas. They are described as perfectionist but still procrastinate a lot.
ISFP - The Composer/The Artist: They are gentle and compassionate people who have a sensible view of the world and themselves. They can be quiet but this makes them keen observers who live in the moment. These people would never force their own views on others since they are considerate and respectful. They can often be misunderstood as weak since they don’t communicate as much as the other signs, however, it just makes them more mysterious than anything else. This personality expresses themselves through actions and art instead of verbal communication.
ENFJ - The Giver/The Protagonist: These people focus a lot on others since they are charismatic and outspoken. They have a great moral compass and can connect with anyone despite their background or personality. They tend to live in their own imaginary world rather than the real world. They focus on what could happen in the future and not living in the now which can make them overlook what is right in front of them.
ESFJ - The Provider/The Consul: This personality is what you would stereotypically describe as ‘the popular ones’. They love being the centre of attention and will lead their team into victory. They are passionate about organizing social events and want to ensure that everyone is happy. These people are focused on their appearance and their social status rather than science and politics. They are interested in gossip, however, they wish to use their powers for the better.
ESFP - The Performer/The Promoter: They focus on what is present here and now and their stance on life is that we only have one life so live it to the fullest. These people want to charm everyone around them which make them warm and friendly people who understand others’ emotional needs. They want to impress people through their possessions and love to be admired, however, they don’t seek other people’s approval.
ENFP - The Champion/The Campaigner: These people are highly individualistic and want to create their own ideas and methods. They don’t want to be forced to live in a box and don’t get along with ‘cookie-cutter people’. They love being around people who have a strong intuitive nature like themselves. They operate based on their feelings and they understand the world around them on another level since they are highly perceptive and thoughtful.
ESTP - The Doer/The Entrepreneur: This personality loves being social and interacting with people. They are very much in touch with their feelings, however, they work will with logical processes and reasoning. They don’t like to be held back by anything since they need their freedom. When working on projects, they carefully go through everything before making their next move to make sure that potential mistakes are fixed which means they don’t need a contingency plan. They are perfectionists and the abstract doesn’t interest them.
ESTJ - The Supervisor/The Executive: These people are great at decision making and they are very logical and analytical people. Their beliefs are straightforward and they are results-orientated. They work hard and rarely procrastinate since they are motivated and have high standards for themselves and their work. This personality isn’t confused about what they want for the future and they know how to pursue their goals in life.
ENTJ - The Commander/The Fieldmarshal: They are natural-born leaders who possess charisma and confidence like no other. They can draw people together and make them stand behind a common goal, however, they can be seen as quite ruthless to some people due to their drive and sharp minds. They can overwhelm timid people but they don’t do it on purpose. They love a good challenge and can achieve anything they set their mind to.
ENTP - The Visionary/The Debater: This final personality is one of the rarest in the world since they are extroverted but they hate small talk and aren’t comfortable in social situations. They are intelligent and constantly needs to be mentally stimulated. They love discussing theories and ideas in a little to much detail, however, they are rational and logical when dealing with arguments.
These are the 16 personality types discussed briefly. Personally, I’m an ENFP which I definitely see and it would be so cool of you found out what you were as well. All of the character traits might not fit you but it’s in interesting analysis of who you potentially are or who you can become.
