5 questions with... RA Kirsten
While our recruitment is open for Residential Advisors for 2019/20, we have asked some of our current RAs about their experiences as an RA this year...
In this edition of 5 questions, we chat with Kirsten who is a Fashion Buying and Merchandising student, working as an RA at Birley Student Living.
What attracted you to become a Residential Advisor when you applied?
I thought it would be a good experience that would look great on my CV and make me stand out from every other student who just has retail experience. The job also comes with great perks and additional pay for any hours worked so means I can fund my shopping addiction.
What is your favourite thing about the job?
The best thing about the job is planning events. Recently I worked on a pizza and games night which was a great success and made even better by the free pizza!
How did you find the assessment day and what advice can you give to applicants?
I was very nervous about the assessment day but it was much more relaxed than I was expecting and so my nerves were quickly settled! It began with an overview of the role, group activities and ended with a role play. There was time in between the activities to talk to other people attending the assessment day and to returning RAs too. My one piece of advice would be to just be confident in yourself – don't pretend to be anyone that you’re not as it will be obvious and as the teams are so varied, your true self might be exactly what they’re looking for!
Can you tell us about the piece of training you have received to date, which has had the most impact for you?
Training week overall was a great experience with lots of useful training during the day and the evenings to get to know each other. I found a session on the SAGE and THYME model particularly useful. It is a model to base conversations on & is useful not only when talking to my students but I also subconsciously apply it when having deep chats with my friends!
Why should people apply to be a Residential Advisor?
It's such a great experience to make more friends (I’ve met such amazing friends and we love nothing more than takeaway nights and nights out to unwind)! You will also learn and develop so many skills that will make you sound amazing in interviews such as team working, communication and organisation skills.
Recruitment is still open for to be part of the team next academic year...
