Find out more about the Vine Court Warden, Dan Slattery...
I originally came to Liverpool in 2001. I was on a year’s career break and thought I would study for a Master’s degree and return to my job. But the city worked its magic and I’ve lived here ever since.
I was a Residential Advisor at Melville Grove and Vine Court from September 2004 until March 2014, when I became Warden of Vine Court. So I have experience of studying and working at the University, which I’ll happily share with you. If you frequent the Sydney Jones Library, you’ll find me working there most afternoons. As a Library Assistant, my job is to help you find those elusive books as well as making sure the catalogue is as accurate as possible. That’s when I’m not ordering textbooks or repairing those that are showing a bit of wear and tear.
My tips for first year?
- Student discounts and freebies are everywhere so make the most of them.
- Join a Guild society. If none of the existing ones appeal, start one. Extra-curricular activities give you downtime and boost your CV at the same time.
- Every Hall has a Student Committee to organise events. Get involved. Tell us what you’d like. The annual Hall Formal is on 28th / 29th October. Put the date in your diary.
If you need help in any aspect of student life, there is always someone to support you, whether that’s your RA, me, your department, Student Welfare and Guidance, Guild Advice or external organisations.
Make friends - in hall, on your course, socially, wherever. Some of them will be friends for life.
