Is your diet as good as you think it is?
With summer only around the corner, it's time to start thinking about getting your body and diet right.
But are you going the best way about it?
There are a lot of myths and crash diets that aren't as good for you as you think they are. Do any of these sound familiar?
1. "No carbs before Marbs"
Or wherever you've booked for summer! If you completely cut carbs from your diet you're guaranteed to lose weight but it isn't all good. You'll be really tired because carbs give you energy and once you start eating carbs again you'll pile the weight back on. If you want to cut down, introduce brown carbs or use alternatives.
2. Meat, meat and more meat
One huge misconception that people make is thinking that meat is the only source of protein but this couldn't be more wrong. Beans, kale, spinach, broccoli and eggs (and more) are all vegetarian ingredients that contain plenty of protein so you don't always need to eat meat to get your fix. The Greggs vegan sausage roll is enough proof of that, anyway!
3. A huge, greasy cheat day
We've all been there - having a great week of eating clean and then you crave something naughty BUT smaller treats throughout the week are better than sticking to a strict diet and smashing a large Domino's pizza and 2-litre bottle of Coke once the weekend comes around. Plus you don't have to worry about the food coma...
4. Indulging in alcohol
You can eat well and exercise regularly but once you indulge in a bit too much alcohol on a night out or a casual night in, you've cancelled out all your hard work. Most alcoholic drinks include more calories than you realise but there's nothing wrong with the occasional treat as long as you don't go mad!
5. Crash diets
Celebrities often promote these but they aren't the best. Things like Atkins and the 5:2 diet are good but only on a short-term basis because you don't eat enough. The same goes for products like BooTea and Flat Tummy Tea, they contain laxatives that can make you pretty poorly so always opt for a balanced diet and regular exercise instead.
6. Cutting out all fats
Instantly you probably think that you need to cut fat from your diet because, well, you don't want to get fat but you're wrong - good fats actually exist! This means that you should be including foods like avocado, walnuts, olives, tofu, eggs and yoghurt in your diet.
