Who said students can't cook... well bake!
Huge congratulations to Team "Nuts" who wowed the judges with their Fairtrade bakes to seal the win and be crowned The Great Oadby Bake Off winners of 2016.
The team of two (Elizabeth and Giada) from Digby Hall, sealed the win with their bakes of Chocolate torte and lemon curd in filo pastry. All teams were judged on taste, creativity and presentation of their bakes.
Team 'Nuts' won a two course lunch in the 1st Floor Park Side restaurant along with a glass of Prosecco each on arrival. As the prize was for four winners, they were able to bring along two friends to also enjoy.
In total there were 25 bakers who entered the competition, making it one of our highly attended and competitive events in Oadby Student Village.
Fairtrade bakes included:-
- Chocolate mud cake in flower pots
- Cake version of a tequila slammer - shot glass made out of cookie with shot of milk inside and chocolate brownie instead of a lemon wedge.
- Rose cake
- Lemon drizzle cake
- Ice cream cones filled with cake
- Chocolate lasagne
Not only were their cakes creative, so were their team names as well as being totally random:-
- Flour Power
- 221B Baker Street
Some of them were too creative to mention!
The competition wasn't always smooth sailing, there were some mishaps but students never give up and soldiered on. A Baked Alaska started melting before being eaten and one team weren't aware until hours before that they needed two bakes, but they persevered and got their second bake done and made it through to the final.
We would like to thank all nine judges including 2 SRAs, members from the Student's Union and RACS staff as well as all the bakers who took part.
