Out and About Beyond Loughborough

By ahenry 11 Sep 2013

There's a lot to see and do in Loughborough - both on campus and in town - but it's always good to get out and explore!

Leicester is just over 10 miles from Loughborough and is a vibrant city with lots to see, eat (and drink), and do: cinemas, galleries, shops and bars in abundance. Here are some ideas for a day - and night - out in the city...

Don't have a car to get around? Don't worry, there are other travel options.

  • Kinchbus run the Service 2 bus from Loughborough to Leicester every 30 minutes.
  • East Midlands Trains run regular trains taking just over 10 minutes each way.

Leicester has loads of galleries and museums, all of which you can see here. The list keeps growing, as Leicester aims to become the UK City of Culture 2017. Here are a few of the best...

  • New Walk Museum and Art Gallery - Leicester's original museum and gallery has it all - dinosaurs, Ancient Egypt, Picasso, and... a Costa Coffee shop.
  • Cultural Quarter - Not a museum or gallery as such, but an area with lots of great cultural activity, from cool, arty cinemas to cutting-edge theatres, artist studios, bars and shops.

Food & Drink

As you'd expect, Leicester has all the chains - from fast food favourites to high street Italians. But it's worth making an effort to try something a bit different. Leicester has a wide range of independent restaurants serving up food from across the globe - from Kurdistan to Nepal - but is particularly famous for its Indian fare.

Visit Leicester has a long list of the best places to get some global grub here.
