Homesickness: What to do when you miss mum and dad
Being homesick at uni is normal, and every student will want to go back to the nest at some point.
Here's how you can cope with being homesick:
Spend time with flatmates
They aren't exactly your parents, but they sure do give great hugs, so spend some time with the people who know how you like your tea to take your mind off things. If you stay in your room hugging your teddy, you'll only make yourself worse, so ensure that you socialise and smile.
Eat your favourite food
It doesn't hurt to treat yourself every once in a while, especially when times get tough. Sometimes all it takes is a hearty bowl of cheesy pasta to put a smile on your face, especially when you eat it tucked up in bed watching Netflix.
Go for a walk
Taking a relaxing evening walk can reduce stress and allow you to enjoy your surroundings. Whether its alone in your thoughts or amongst the chatter of your closest friends, heading out into nature is a great way to distract your mind from something other than your mum's cooking.
Even if you're super unfit, going out for a quick lap around the track can get the endorphins flowing, which in turn makes you feel on top of the world. So get your trainers on and get running: Bring a friend along to race them and make things interesting!
Keep in touch
Rather than hopping on the next train home straight away, give your loved ones a call so they know how you're feeling. A quick natter with mum can reassure you that they are always there for you - just think, they are probably missing you just as much as you miss them!
Look after yourself
Remember, you are always number one so don't be afraid to take time out to look after and treat yourself, even if that means spending the day in pyjamas watching your favourite films, the world can wait.
If times get really hard, don't be afraid to get in touch with your uni's support services and talk to someone - they're there to help and understand how it feels to be homesick.
