Should I get a paid job or work experience over the summer?
Uni has ended and if you’re off home for the summer, you’ll no doubt want to start earning some money so you can enjoy yourself over the summer catching up with friends and family and maybe even a cheeky little getaway, festival, and the rest! Plus, you may have a hefty overdraft you want to clear ready for next year.
Plus, if you’re lounging around at home all the time you’ll probably get really fed up and have your parents on your back. So it may be an idea to dust off the CV and get out there.
Yet, although you may need some money, it could be beneficial to get some valuable work experience that will help benefit you when you graduate. Building up your work experience and portfolio now will help you stand out when you’re looking for grad jobs as you’ve already built up some of this work experience and have an enhanced CV compared to others who are just building up their CV.
Part time work
You could consider working part time and getting back in touch with any old employers you worked with before you went to university. It could be a good idea to then work one day a week on a voluntary basis in the industry you’re interested in. Apply directly to a range of companies in your industry and see if they’re offering work placements or the chance to come in and shadow staff.
Getting a paid internship is ideal as you’re earning and getting experience in what you want to do in the long run. Check out these sites for some places you can do apply for an internship. If you’ve left uni, you may also be torn between just getting any job for money and the one related to your studies and an internship can be a great way to get that first foot in the door in your chosen industry. Check out some internship sites you can use.
Why not combine fun with work and great experience? You could look at doing a summer camp abroad or working overseas. This also helps to give students a bit of an edge when applying for work as it shows there’s something about you if you’re able to get up and go abroad. You’ll gain a range of life lessons and skills that can be transferred into different roles.
Volunteering can be a great way to bag yourself a free gig, festival or day out without needing to fork out hundreds of pounds for an event. Niftybins.com are looking for volunteers to help out at festivals such as Leeds, Latitude, Reading, Electric Picnic and more. Contact Niftybinsfbi@gmail.com to find out more about how you can volunteer and get to attend some top festivals and help the environment.
